Whether it’s sleep disruption, distraction or comparing our lives on social media, it has been argued that excessive use of technology can result in or exacerbate feelings of anxiety. On National Stress Awareness Day, we’re taking a look at 3 simple ways you can use, or not use, technology to de-stress.
Calm, which was named the number one app of the year in the UK and USA last year, is designed to aid you in meditation and reduce your anxiety through mindfulness.
Through guided meditation, breathing exercises, peaceful music and calming visuals, this app claims to help you get a more restful sleep, as well as alleviate stress. Headspace, another app focussed on guided meditation and is argued to relieve stress, improve focus and heighten attention.
And step away from social media! Social media detoxes are becoming increasingly popular, with many choosing to take a mental break from their beloved social platforms.
There are countless benefits to curbing your social media addiction and stepping away from technology for a while. It puts a stop to online comparison, which only adds to negative mental thoughts and if you’re someone who is on their phone before bed, you may find you sleep better as you are not being affected by the screen light. It also gives you time to do something you might not otherwise find time to, such as reading a book or going for a walk and allows you to properly connect with the people around you in your real life!
One of the most proven ways to help relieve stress is regular exercise.
Physical movement releases endorphins in the brain, which quite literally make you feel better and your focus will solely be on the physical activity you’re doing. In turn, exercise will help your sleep and your overall mood, reducing feelings of stress and anxiety. Check out our top 5 health and fitness apps here.
