What is group travel insurance?

Group travel insurance is travel insurance designed for a set of people going on the same trip. Rather than each person arranging separate cover, you can include multiple travellers under one policy, with everyone listed on the policy details.

It’s still travel insurance in the usual sense. What’s included, and what you may be able to claim for, depends on the cover level you choose and the policy terms.

Who group travel insurance is for

Group cover can suit you if you’re travelling together but don’t all live at the same address, for example:

  • Friends on a holiday
  • A wedding party or stag or hen trip
  • A sports club or society trip
  • Work colleagues travelling together

If everyone in your party lives at the same address, you may find family travel insurance is a better fit. If you’re travelling as a pair, couples travel insurance may also be worth comparing.

How group travel insurance works

  1. Tell us about the trip (where you’re going, when you’re travelling, and who’s going).
  2. Pick your cover level and any relevant options for your trip.
  3. Review before you buy, so you can check the details, conditions, and exclusions.

Cover is provided in line with the policy terms and the details shown on your policy documentation.

What you can typically claim for

Travel insurance is designed to help with common “what if” moments around a trip. What you may be able to claim for depends on the cover level you select and the policy terms.

Common areas people look for

  • Cancellation and cutting a trip short (depending on the reason and policy conditions)
  • Medical emergencies and related support while you’re away
  • Delay and travel disruption
  • Lost, stolen, or damaged belongings (subject to conditions, exclusions, and limits)

If you want a clearer view of the differences between cover options, start with our cover levels.

What group travel insurance may not cover

Like most travel insurance, group cover isn’t designed to cover every scenario. Exact exclusions depend on the policy terms, but common examples can include:

  • Claims linked to alcohol or drug use
  • Claims linked to a pre-existing medical condition that hasn’t been declared where declaration is required
  • Activities that need an add-on (for example winter sports), if you haven’t selected the relevant option

Group policies are intended for people travelling together. If your group plans to split up for different departure points or different travel arrangements, it’s worth checking the policy terms before you buy.

Terms and conditions apply. Eligibility criteria and exclusions apply.

How to choose the right cover level

Start with the trip you’re taking, then work backwards:

  • Trip type: is this a one-off trip or a year of multiple trips? See single trip and annual multi-trip.
  • Trip length: annual policies can have a maximum length per trip, depending on the cover level selected.
  • Who’s travelling: age limits can apply. For Single Trips, the maximum age limit for benefits is 80 years inclusive. For Annual Multi-Trips, the maximum age limit for benefits is 70 years inclusive.
  • What you’re doing: cruises and winter sports often need specific consideration. See cruise travel insurance and winter sports travel insurance.
  • What you’re taking: if you want travel insurance that includes cover options for gadgets, explore travel insurance with gadget cover.

We currently offer 3 levels of cover: Plus, Premium, and Premium+. What’s included depends on the level you pick and the policy terms.
