Would a family travel insurance policy benefit you and your loved ones?

All you need to know about family holiday cover

Holidays are a great opportunity to spend quality time together as a family, after all life can get super busy with little pickles running around. Even so, you need to be something of an organised ninja to get prepped for a getaway, making a one-stop-shop for travel insurance that much more appealing.

Taking out one policy as a family, can work out a lot cheaper than arranging individual insurance for each family member.

Along with saving those extra pounds, completing only one travel insurance application also saves you a mountain of time. What’s more, it means one family member can be solely responsible for managing the policy on behalf of the family.

We’re on hand to give you a run down of family travel insurance and what it’s all about so you can focus on the important things, like digging out that tropical shirt you know will result in multiple eye-rolls from the kids.

What is family travel insurance?

Family travel insurance is a policy that covers every individual in a family party for one or multiple trips. Unlike couples travel insurance, or groups, family cover is especially designed for a family.

Inclusive of one or two parents or guardians, and at least one child or dependent under the age of 18 (or 21 in full-time education). As a rule of thumb, each member named on the policy must live at the same address on a permanent basis.

When taking out a family policy, think about the nature of your trip, where you’re planning to travel, and the activities you’re likely to partake in, and ensure your policy is inclusive of these factors.

How does family holiday insurance work?

You can take out a family policy to cover both single-trip travel insurance or annual travel insurance. If you’re only planning to travel once or twice a year, then single trip family cover will suit your needs better, for more frequent travellers, we recommend an annual policy. Like individual cover, you can also select the regions you want your insurance to cover such as EU or worldwide.
Have a think about the types of family trips you’re likely to take, whether you enjoy an all-inclusive poolside retreat on the Costa Brava once a year, or multiple visits to see Mickey Mouse at Disneyland, in which case you’d get more out of a multi-trip policy.

Similar to individual insurance policies, there are different cover levels to choose from, with higher premiums often providing more of a safety net and lower excess costs.
Some of the perks associated with this type of policy include an increased level of baggage and cancellation cover yet for single parents or parents travelling solo with just one child, individual cover may be more cost-effective.

How much does travel insurance cost for a year?

The cost of your cover will be dependent on several factors including your age, where you are travelling to, and if you have any pre-existing health conditions.

It’s worth taking the time to get a quote for annual insurance tailored to your needs. After all, a 25 year old with no pre-existing health conditions can expect a lower premium compared to a 55 year old with a severe heart condition.

Travelling exclusively around Europe will naturally be cheaper than hopping to the US one minute and Asia the next. Worldwide cover compared to European cover can sometimes be double the cost and there is no point paying double if you are only going to Germany – unless you are just a bit quirky like that.

You can determine where your policy starts from so there is also little sense in starting a policy from 1st May if you are not planning your next trip until much later in the year. So, to avoid throwing money away on insurance you’re not using, try to get the timing just right.

It’s also worth noting that many insurer’s vying for your custom often throw a couple of extra months’ cover for free, which is a great excuse to squeeze in another sun-soaked getaway if you’re feeling extravagant.

Does travel insurance cover family emergencies?

Travelling as a family means that sometimes you can hit a bump in the road, after all the more people travelling the bigger the risk. Rest assured, your travel insurance will cover any emergency involving a family member, as long as they’re named on the policy. After all, these are the people that matter to you most of all and you want to make sure they are protected.

At loveit coverit, we offer a 24/7 phone line available for any medical emergency and your cover will include getting you back home as soon as possible, should you require, this includes family bereavement. If you are abroad and need urgent assistance, please contact the Emergency Medical Service on +44 0203 0931749.

It's very important that any pre-existing health conditions held by anyone on the policy are declared when you make your application.

Is coming home earlier covered by travel insurance?

If you need to return home early due to circumstances beyond your control, you will be covered by your travel insurance with loveit coverit, whether due to illness or an accident.

You may also be covered if for example, your home or place of business is burgled whilst you’re away, a family member back home or close business associate has become seriously ill, or as a member of military personnel, you are ordered to return to duty.

Depending on how early you need to curtail your trip, any upheld claim will be based on the time you lost out on and will also factor in any additional costs you’ve had to endure to get home.
