What “travel insurance with gadget cover” means

Travel insurance with gadget cover is a travel policy where you can add a Gadget Cover Extension for certain portable electronic items you bring on your trip. If you choose it, it will be shown on your policy schedule.

The policy definition of “Gadget(s)” includes items such as mobile phones, tablets, iPads, e-readers/Kindles, sat navs, handheld games consoles, portable DVD players, headphones, wireless speakers, cameras, laptops, iPods/MP3 players, and smart watches.

Terms and conditions apply. Eligibility criteria and exclusions apply.

Who this type of cover suits

This is designed for people who travel with tech they’d struggle to replace at short notice, for example:

  • Holidaymakers carrying a phone, tablet, headphones, or a smart watch
  • Families travelling with multiple devices (and multiple chargers)
  • People taking laptops or cameras abroad
  • Work trips where you’re carrying personal gadgets (note: business items are not covered under gadget cover)

If you’re not sure which travel policy type you need, you can compare Single Trip Travel Insurance and Annual Travel Insurance, then add gadget cover if it suits your trip.

This is designed to help with travelling with gadgets, but it’s not right for everyone.

How gadget cover works within the policy

  1. Choose your travel policy type (Single Trip or Annual Multi Trip).
  2. Select a cover level (cover differs by level, so check the Terms and Conditions for details).
  3. Add gadget cover if you want the Gadget Cover Extension (it applies only if shown on your policy schedule).

Eligibility and evidence requirements for gadgets

To insure a gadget under the extension, you need to meet the policy’s conditions. For example, gadgets must be purchased in the UK (including refurbished items purchased directly from the manufacturer or network provider), be no more than 6 years old at the date you start your trip, and you must be able to provide evidence of ownership (and, for some claims, proof of usage).

What gadget cover can help with

Subject to the policy terms and exclusions, the Gadget Cover Extension may help with:

  • Repairs if your gadget is damaged due to an accident while on your trip
  • Repairs for electrical or mechanical breakdown (where it occurs whilst on your trip and outside the manufacturer’s guarantee period)
  • Replacement if your gadget is accidentally lost or stolen while on your trip (including replacement of part(s) where only part of a gadget is lost or stolen)
  • Unauthorised calls or data downloads (for mobile phones, following an approved claim, within the policy conditions)

Important note on replacements

The gadget extension is not a replacement “as new” policy. If a gadget cannot be repaired, it may be replaced with an identical gadget or one of comparable (or better) specification or equivalent value. Replacement items are delivered to a UK address, and you would need to arrange onward shipment to your destination country.

Key exclusions to be aware of

Gadget cover is designed to help in specific scenarios, but it won’t cover everything. Common exclusions and conditions include:

  • Unattended items: theft or accidental loss isn’t covered if a gadget is left unattended in a public place, or left in luggage during transit (with limited exceptions set out in the policy).
  • Reporting timeframes: you must report theft or loss to the police within 48 hours and obtain a police report. For mobile phones, you must also report the incident to your service provider to bar and blacklist your phone within 24 hours.
  • Wear, servicing, and defects: routine servicing/maintenance, manufacturer defects/recalls, and cosmetic damage that does not affect safety or performance are not covered.
  • Water-related limitations: liquid damage is excluded where the event involved taking gadgets on a boat or other water vessels, or taking part in water activities.
  • Specific items: no cover is provided for mechanical breakdown of a laptop computer, or for loss, damage, or theft of a drone.
  • Travel advice restrictions: trips to (or through) certain countries, or anywhere the FCDO advises against all travel, are not covered.

Cover levels, limits, and excess for gadget cover

loveit coverit offers multiple travel insurance cover levels (Plus, Premium, and Premium+). The cover provided under each level is different, so you should check the Terms and Conditions for details.

Gadget cover limit and single article limit

Where gadget cover is included, the Gadget Cover Extension provides cover up to £1,000 per trip, with a £1,000 single article limit.

Gadget excess (what you pay towards a claim)

Excess applies to gadget claims. The gadget cover excess shown in the benefit table varies by cover level: £150 (Plus), £100 (Premium), and £60 (Premium+).

How to protect your gadgets while travelling

A few simple habits can reduce the risk of loss, theft, and accidental damage (and make any potential claim much easier to evidence):

  • Keep gadgets with you when you’re on the move. If you’re not using it, store it securely rather than leaving it on a café table “for a second”.
  • Use hotel safes where available, or keep gadgets out of sight in locked accommodation where possible.
  • Save proof of ownership (receipts, delivery notes, gift receipts) somewhere you can access while travelling.
  • Know your reporting steps in advance: local police report (within the required timeframe) and, for phones, contacting your network to bar and blacklist.
  • Be water-wise around pools, boats, and water activities (even “water resistant” doesn’t mean “stress-proof”).
